Greek gods

LI: To use our smart searching skills to find information about the Greek gods

Today David shared his reading challenge with us. It is all about the Greek gods and helps us to practise the skills we have been learning in our reading lessons with our teachers.

David created this task as part of his CARE award challenges. We earn CARE award badges in year 7 and 8 to show that we understand our school values. In this activity we used our smart searching skills to find information to help us complete the table.

I found this activity cool and interesting because I got to learn diffrent things about greek gods and got to identifiy the diffrent greek gods and godess.

The Greek god I found most interesting is Ares because he's is the god of war and courage and I respect that. His life story is also intresting.

Happiness

LI: To edit our writing using DRAFT.

This week for writing we wrote abstract noun poems in pairs. An abstract noun is something that exists but cannot be touched. Our abstract noun poem was about happiness. An abstract noun includes the 5 senses (Touch/ feel, taste, hear, see and smell), punctuation ( Capital letters , .) complex sentences, metaphors and similes After we finished writing our poems we used the DRAFT (Delete, Rearrange, Add, Fix, Talk)  process to check our poem, with draft we can make correct errors in our  writing.

Friendship Poem.

LI: To write an abstract noun senses poem

For Writing we were learning about abstract nouns, metaphors, and about the 5 senses. Learning about these things helped us create our poem and be able to make it creatively as well as have a good structure. Each sentence of our poem was for each sense, so it smells and much more. Also our topic for our poem was any abstract noun.

An abstract noun is a noun that is intangible, like a feeling such as love & hatred.

Our 5 senses are Sight, Smell, Feel, Taste, and our Hearing. These are what we use in our everyday lives, and are senses we use to elevate our writing.

A Metaphor is a speech term, part of figurative language. Metaphors are used to compare two things without using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.

Forming an Idea

LI: LI: To consider both perspectives

We were tasked to read the story about Lake Taupo to understand if the story was fact or story makes sense by saying if the story is true or fake. We wrote our opinion to see that why we picked which side to see if it was right or wrong. We wrote that taupo says according to legend which means it happened but actually is true.

I found this task fun because we got to find new information about Lake Taupo.

Main Ideas

LI: To identify the main ideas in the text.

First to start off the task we watched a video about how Maui slowed down the sun. After watching the video we wrote down the main ideas that happened in the video into this DLO. After finding the inportant Ideas from that we find the four very important ideas. One of the four very important ideas is that Using the flax for ropes slowed the sun. When you find the four very important ideas we found the three vital idean from the four very important ideas. I found this task fun because when you find main ideans from the text that means that you understand the text throughly.

Venn Diagram

LI: To find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and text of “ The Beginning "

This week for reading we have been focusing on the differences of two types of ways a story can be said. This week we were finding differences and similarities from the video and text from "the Begining". This text was about our group finding things that are different and simaler bewtweeen the too. In the video verison it shows the seperation of mother earth and father sky, and in the written version it's explain the love for the two. I enjoyed this task because I got to see the differneces and similaritites bewtween two storys.

Summarising

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about.

For reading, we have been focusing on summarising text information such as stories, articles and other texts. The text we used for this reading task was the traditional Maori story of how the world came to be. We used the summarising DLO to help us write what we think happeneds in the in the story is true. First we needed to find 20 inportant words from the story, then we had to find the 6 most important words from the 20 important words. After doing that we used those six words to make a short story about the story. I found this task intersting because I got to summarise a story in fewer words, meaning I understand what they story is about.

Creative writing

LI: To understand how to use descriptive words to make your writting more interesting

Our focus for writing this week was to use descriptive writing, which means using words that are powerful, making your text more exciting to read and add more detail into your writing. We were tasked to work collaboratively in pairs to complete this task. Our task was to describe one of the two pictures that we were given. To make this task easier we would use our prior knowledge of sentence structures, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and descriptive words to create a piece of writing that uses descriptive words to make the text exciting to read. I found this interesting because I got to find out words to describe the great green ocean turtle.

Samoan Languge week

LI: To pay it forward by creating a screencastify that teaches others how to use Samoan words and phrases.

  • This week is Samoan Language Week - Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa. The theme for 2021 is Poupou le lotoifale. Ola manuia le anofale which means strengthen the posts of your house, for all to thrive. In LS2 we have decided to value the measina of the language by creating a screencastify that teaches others how to use Samoan words and phrases.

My partner and I chose to pay it forward by showing others how to speak Samoan so they can teach others to learn thier numbers too in Samoan.

I found this challenge fun because we got to learn about some Samoan words too and because I liked paying it forward.

Being a jedi in coding

LI: To code the robot to move backwards without touching it - to be a jedi

The Mandalorian's Baby Yoda Confirmed To Have An Actual Name, But You Can't Know It Yet

My robot will wait until i have pressed the onboard button before it does anything. We used an "IF - THEN - ELSE" block as this gives the robot two choices of things to do. We are using the ULTRASONIC  SENSORon the of the robot and we need to sense if something 10cm in front of it. IF something is 10cm or LESS in front of the robot , it will move backwards. IF something is NOT less han 10cm in the front of the robot, it wil move forwards (ELSE). This is all put into a forever block so that the robot constantly senses what is in front of it.

Cinquain Poem

LI: To write a cinquain poem to describe a sports star

  • We have been learning to write cinquain poems to help us strengthen our connections to description. A cinquain poem has 5 lines. Each line has a different purpose. Line 1 is a noun which is a name. Line 2 has 2 adjectives taht describe the noun. Line 3 has 3 verbs that end in ‘ing’ and describe the actions. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun. Line 5 is a synonym which is a word with a similar meaning to the noun.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to write how Steven Adam is so talented.

My Reading Pathway

LI: To show my personal journey though books.

At the moment I like reading Skulduggery Pleasant because their are cool adventures and their is magic.

Tech reflection

Today the year 8 boys and girls did tech. Mr Grundy said we have to pick a design we want to do. I chose a skate board. with a skate board you have two joints and you can use any type of wheels but your skate board must be the right size. In my group I was with Akuhata Rj and Leroy we all chose skate boards the best part was when we got to draw the designs we picked. I chose a skate board because it is fun to play with when we finished we all said thank you to Mr Grundy and then we went on the bus and back to school.
